BACKGROUND
Background
The Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Delta Dental to support the Smile for Kids, Project Access Dental (PAD) Program. Grant funds will be used to provide emergency dental services to school-aged children who are uninsured or unable to obtain dental coverage. Eligible services include exams, x-rays, fillings, extractions, pulp therapy, crowns, and space maintenance.
The program also supports referral coordination by School Health nurses to the Chandler Dental Clinic, improving access to timely care. Outcomes include improved health, reduced pain, and enhanced school attendance and performance. Since 2015, the program has been fully grant-funded and has served 85 uninsured children. With an average cost of $250-$500 per child, the current award is projected to serve approximately fifteen (15) children.
