PROCLAMATION
Proclamation
WHEREAS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells that control movement, impacting the brain and spinal cord and leading to muscle weakness, loss of mobility and loss of life; and
WHEREAS, thousands of new ALS cases are reported annually and the average survival time after diagnosis is two to five years; and
WHEREAS, this disease can impact anyone and currently has no known cause, means of prevention, or cure, making diagnosis difficult; and
WHEREAS, individuals living with ALS, their families and their caregivers, face significant challenges, requiring compassionate care, education, and community support; and
WHEREAS, securing access to new therapies, durable medical equipment, and communication technologies are essential for people living with ALS; and
WHEREAS, increased public awareness, and research funding are vital to improving quality of life for those affected and to advancing the search for treatments and a cure.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners do hereby declare May 2026 as “Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Awareness Month” and encourages citizens to raise awareness and support those impacted by this disease.
