BACKGROUND
background
On June 1, 2022 the County entered into an agreement as a result of funding through the NC General Assembly budget providing start-up costs to the City of Greensboro, along with Charlotte and Greenville, for a medical component of their behavioral health response unit. The program was funded effective April 1, 2022 for a period of one (1) year expiring on March 30, 2023. The City and County are seeking to extend the term of the contract in order to complete the final quarter of grant project between the Greensboro Police Department and Guilford County Emergency Services extending the term through June 30, 2023. The grant funds allowed for the provision of a community paramedic for their Behavioral Health Response Team (BHRT) to be embedded with the police and civilian counselors. The focus of this initiative was to provide linkage to care for clients that demonstrate high public safety demand and provide a medical conscience for them in their social environment. The cost of providing this service will be reimbursed by the City of Greensboro on a quarterly basis, per the terms of the agreement, as well as initial funding for program equipment.
The program was modeled after the STAR program in Denver, CO. (https://mhcd.org/star-program/)
