BACKGROUND

Background

Guilford County Public Schools will provide a presentation on revisions to existing project ordinances and seek approval of 12 new project ordinances totaling $92,000,000. Guilford County schools will provide a presentation to explain increases in project ordinances for the following projects previously approved by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners on 4/15/2021:

                     Kiser Middle School  +$26,188,759

                     Claxton Elementary School +$19,043,631

                     Brooks Global Studies  +$16,850,630

                     Peck Expeditionary Learning School  +$37,783,245

Foust Gaming & Robotics School  +$28,603,392

                     Hampton/Peeler K-5 VPA  +$35,870,365

The presentation will provide additional information on how the following factors influenced increases in project costs, including:

Increase in construction costs due to inflation/supply chain/labor

Increases in construction costs due to additional square footage in project design

Implementation of 21st century school design elements

                     Additional increases in contingencies

Current project revisions are based on cost estimates provided by Guilford County School’s contracted architectural/engineering firms. Actual costs will be available once the Construction Manager at Risk firms (CMARS) finalize the bid process and issue a Guaranteed Maximum Prices (GMP) over the next four months, which will provide more precise cost estimates.  Approving ordinance revisions now will provide more flexibility to Guilford County Public Schools to enter into contracts as GMPs are received.  Staff will provide an update on received GMPs and may need additional revisions if GMPS exceed funding available in the project ordinance.
