BACKGROUND
Background
Seventy-seven (77) of the Dell network switches the County uses are considered by the manufacturer to be End of Support (EOS) in September 2023. The manufacturer will no longer offer functionality enhancements or security updates, and hardware replacement will be on a best effort basis after EOS.
Network switches connect our remote sites and the downtown buildings to the county network. They connect equipment like PCs (2670), printers (425), Wi-Fi access points (325), security cameras (600), door access controls (75), and health department lab equipment for data collection and sharing. The numbers in parentheses are the approximate count of these devices used across the County. County Wi-Fi access points allow over 1,000 staff to wirelessly access County systems and over 1,000 visitors to access the public internet on a daily basis. The switches to be replaced are in eleven (11) different buildings across Greensboro and High Point.
The current lead time for delivery from the manufacturer is 6-8 months. Deployment / installation time is estimated at 4-6 months. Ordering before the end of September 2022 will ensure that we can replace these switches prior to EOS. It will also insulate the County from price increases expected in September 2022.
The cost of these switches, including associated software, cables, power supplies, and estimated sales tax of 6.5% is $901,982.81 and has been included in our adopted FY23 budget.
This purchase has been reviewed and approved for Board consideration by Purchasing to confirm the same or more favorable pricing, terms, and conditions have been extended to the County consistent with NC IT State Contract No. 204X.
