PROCLAMATION
Proclamation
WHEREAS, Black Business Month was founded in 2004 as an initiative to recognize the contributions, successes, milestones and historical progress of Black-owned businesses throughout the country, and to encourage their continued development; and
WHEREAS, according to the US Census Bureau’s Annual Business Survey, in 2019 Black business owners accounted for ten percent of US businesses and approximately thirty percent of all minority-owned businesses, which amounted to over two million companies owned by African Americans; and
WHEREAS, Black-owned businesses have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, which forced many businesses to close and resulted in a 40% decrease in Black business ownership nationwide; and
WHEREAS, this year, Black businesses will continue to recover from economic losses onset by the pandemic, with the aid of a local community that supports and promotes their contributions in numerous industries, such as health care and social services, repair and maintenance, professional and consulting services, engineering and construction; and
WHEREAS, Guilford County is home to hundreds of Black-owned businesses and African American entrepreneurs supported by advocates like the Greater NC Black Chamber of Commerce and THRIVE High Point, that offer assistance with business and brand development, funding and other essential resources needed for these businesses to grow, expand and thrive.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners proclaim August 2022 as BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS MONTH in Guilford County and encourages our residents to celebrate and recognize the importance of and African American-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in our community and economy.
ADOPTED this the 18th day of August 2022.
