Resolution

HONORING THE LIFE AND MEMORY OF SANDRA CARLTON ALEXANDER

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Sandra Carlton Alexander departed this life at the age of 74 on June 10, 2022, but will be celebrated and remembered for her many achievements and contributions to Greensboro and Guilford County; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Alexander was born on July 26, 1947 in the town of Warsaw, in eastern North Carolina and was raised on the family farm in Duplin County. She was an excellent student at Douglas High School in Warsaw, graduating as Class President and Valedictorian before making her way to Greensboro in 1965 to attend North Carolina A&T State University; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Alexander graduated at the top of her class from A&T University in 1969 before the valedictorian moved on to Harvard University for a master's degree in English and later to the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned a Ph.D.; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Alexander became a Full Professor of English and Director of Freshman Advisement at A&T, later being named co-chair of the English Department, and earned The North Carolina A&T Outstanding Teacher of The Year Award and was also awarded The Excellence in Teaching Medallion from the University North Carolina Board of Governors; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Alexander was awarded the Woman in Business Award from

The Women’s Resource Center and the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr.  Alexander was known as a renaissance woman who held

many different titles from professor - scholar and author, to inventor, business-

woman, entrepreneur and local politician. She found the time and resources to motivate hundreds of teens as founder and director of the Saturday Heritage

Academy Program at Genesis Baptist Church. Also, as well, initiating and advising the Pregnant Teen Mothers Program as a YMCA board member; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Alexander was the first African American candidate to win an At-Large position to the Board of Education for Guilford County Schools and put all her passion into teaching and building up a next generation of children who would have a thirst for knowledge; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Alexander is survived by her husband, Rondal, their two children, Tonya and Derrick, and her grandchildren to whom she instilled hard work and dedication to continue to make this community great.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners that it hereby expresses its appreciation and admiration for the accomplishments of Dr. Sandra Carlton Alexander and her contributions to the Guilford County community and extends its sincerest condolences to her family and friends in her passing.

 

ADOPTED this the 4th day of August, 2022.
