HONORING THE LIFE AND MEMORY OF THE HONORABLE

WENDY MELTON ENOCHS

 

WHEREAS, the Board wishes to honor the memory of Guilford County’s retired Chief District Court Judge Wendy Melton Enochs as a result of her passing on June 25, 2022, by the issuance of this resolution; and,

WHEREAS, Judge Enochs was a remarkable contributor to the Guilford County community and carried exceptional influence in the practice of law serving as Guilford County District Court Judge for 22 years after being elected in 1994, at the time, the youngest District Court judge to be elected in North Carolina at the age of 28, and serving from 2012 to 2016 as the Chief District Court Judge for Guilford County; and

WHEREAS, Judge Enochs was a graduate of Southeast Guilford High School and received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro before pursuing and obtaining her Juris Doctorate degree from Campbell University School of Law in 1991; and,

WHEREAS, Judge Enochs began her distinguished legal career began at the Guilford County District Attorney's Office as an assistant district attorney from 1991 through 1994; and

WHEREAS, In July 2016, Judge Enochs was appointed by Governor Pat McCrory to serve as a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. She retired from public service at the end of her term and joined the law firm of Coltrane, Overfield and Associates as a family law attorney; and

WHEREAS, Judge Enochs served on several community boards and committees during her time as a judge, including the NC Crime Commission and Language Access Committee; and

WHEREAS, outside of the courtroom Judge Enochs was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an usher. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing tennis, paddle tennis, and golf. She loved her weekly dinner and game nights with friends. Judge Enochs was an avid reader, and could often be found reading a book on her sun porch; and, 

WHEREAS, while Judge Enoch’s leadership and faithful service to the community inspired numerous awards and honors she is most remembered for his commitment to, and love of, her family, leaving behind her husband of thirty years, Robert Enochs, and son, Henry Enochs of Greensboro, her mother, Terrissa (Tissie) Melton of Wilmington, a brother, two sisters, nieces, nephews, friends, and coworkers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, that it hereby expresses its appreciation and admiration for the life and service of the Honorable (Retired) Wendy Melton Enochs; and as such be it remembered, that her contributions to the citizens of Guilford County were significant and the Board desires to recognize and memorialize her legacy as an outstanding Judiciary, community leader, wife, mother, mentor, and friend.
