BACKGROUND

Background

The Guilford County Parks Department requests Board approval to submit an application for federal grant funding from the Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), administered through the Division of Parks and Recreation within the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.  The LWCF provides 50/50 matching grants to local governments to acquire new park properties or renovate/replace outdoor recreation facilities and other amenities within existing parks.

If awarded, Parks staff recommend using the grant funds towards the purchase of undeveloped land parcels adjacent to Lake Macintosh along the Guilford Lake Macintosh trail.  Purchase of these properties will help preserve the local water quality and ensure the continued use of lake trails for passive recreation activities, such as hiking and biking.  Staff recommend the use of open space funding and manager's contingency funding to meet the LWCF match funding requirements.  The available balance in the Open Space Acquisition Capital Project ordinance is $249,420.40.
