RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 TERRORIST ATTACKS ON

THE UNITED STATES

WHEREAS, at 8:46AM on September 11, 2001, hijackers deliberately crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into floors 93 through 99 of the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City; and

WHEREAS, 17 minutes later, at 9:03AM, hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center; and

WHEREAS, at 9:37AM, the west wall of the Pentagon was struck by hijacked American Airlines Flight 77, whose impact caused immediate and catastrophic damage to the headquarters of the US Department of Defense; and

WHEREAS, at approximately 10:00AM, upon learning of the other attacks, the passengers and crew of hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 acted heroically by launching a counterattack to seize control of their aircraft and thwart the loss of additional American lives; and

WHEREAS, in response, hijackers crashed the plane into an empty field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania resulting in the death of Greensboro resident, Sandy Bradshaw, a flight attendant who, along with her fellow crew members and Flight 93 passengers, courageously sacrificed their lives to save countless others; and

WHEREAS, a total of nearly 3,000 innocent civilians lost their lives in the attacks and tens of thousands of others narrowly escaped, and all American lives were forever changed as a result of this unprecedented threat to our way of life; and

WHEREAS, countless fire departments, police departments, government officials, civilian workers, emergency medical personnel and volunteers responded immediately and heroically to these horrific events, many suffering fatalities in their rescue efforts; and

WHEREAS, 20 years later, we unite as a nation to remember and pay homage to those who perished in these terrorist attacks, and to honor those civilians and first responders as they ran to aid of those in mortal danger; and 

WHEREAS, on the 20th anniversary of this tragic day, the citizens of Guilford County join their fellow Americans and people around the world to mourn the tremendous loss of innocent life and to remember the victims of the attacks on September 11, 2001, while keeping the families of those left behind in our thoughts and prayers.  

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners that it hereby recognizes the 20th anniversary of the devastating events that occurred on September 11, 2001 and encourages Guilford County citizens to observe a moment of silence at 8:46AM on September 11, 2021 in conjunction with the official 9/11 Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony to be held at the World Trade Center.  The Board honors the heroic service and actions of the first responders and countless others who bravely risked their lives and made the ultimate sacrifice during rescue efforts, and offers its deepest and most sincere condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
