Proclamation
Proclamation Declaring May as Mental Health Awareness Month in Guilford County
WHEREAS, Mental Health Awareness Month is a part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness of mental health illnesses, reduce the stigma of discrimination surrounding mental health, and to increase awareness of services and resources available in our communities; and
WHEREAS, one in five adults experiences a mental health illness in any given year, and 1 and 25 adults experience serious chronic mental illness; and
WHEREAS, mental health is a part of overall health, and helps to sustain an individual’s thought processes, relationships, productivity, and ability to adapt to change or face adversity; however, we too often think about mental health differently than other health issues; and
WHEREAS, all Americans experience times of difficulty and emotional stress in their lives; which has never been more evident than in our current and challenging times; and
WHEREAS, while mental illness can be successfully treated, 60 percent of adults nationwide do not receive treatment as result of either lack of access to services or the stigma often associated with mental illness; and
WHEREAS, with comprehensive and effective treatment options and accessible services, those individuals with mental health conditions can better manage their healthcare and lead full, productive lives; and
WHEREAS, we encourage all citizens to fight stigma associated with mental health, provide supportive opportunities for those in need, educate others and advocate for equal care of individuals with mental illness in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners that it hereby proclaims May 2020 as "MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH" and calls upon all citizens to support those suffering from mental illnesses, raise awareness of mental h...
