BACKGROUND

Background

In support of the national women's suffrage movement, Congress passed the 19th amendment to US Constitution in 1919 and it was formally ratified in 1920, enfranchising approximately 26 million American women.  In this same year, Gertrude Weil founded the North Carolina League of Women Voters on the steps of the Guilford County Courthouse.  Weil was a well known advocate for labor reform and social welfare.

Guilford County was approached by the League of Women Voters of the Piedmont Triad with the recommendation for placement of a commemorative monument and historical marker.  If approved, the marker, which will be funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation's historic signage grant program, will be included in the online "National Votes for Women Trail".  Both will commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the NC League of Women Voters and Gertrude Weil's tireless dedication to the North Carolina Women's Suffrage Movement.
