BACKGROUND
Background
The Guilford County Sheriff's Office is requesting approval to utilize Unauthorized Substance Tax Funds to purchase three (3) K-9s (dual purpose service dogs). The estimated cost of the K-9s is $8,000 each, total of $24,000. The three new K-9s being purchased will be used to replace one K-9 from detention and two K-9s from patrol who have recently been retired from service due to age and health problems. The approximate available balance of the Unauthorized Substance Funds prior to appropriation is $275,000. We have received a quote for the new K-9s from a reputable kennel that we have purchased K-9s from during the past years.

Requested Action
Approve an increase of $24,000 in Appropriated Fund Balance (Unauthorized Substance Tax Funds) and increase the FY 2019-20 Law Enforcement budget by the same amount to reflect the use of Guilford County Unauthorized Substance Tax funds towards the purchase of three (3) K-9s (dual purpose service dogs).
