BACKGROUND
Background
The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is in receipt of the 2019-20 Governor’s Highway Safety Program Grant for a Multi-Agency DWI Task Force in the amount of $257,440 with NO required local match. DWI Taskforce Program grant funds are used for sustainment of the existing multi-agency DWI Taskforce program. These program address traffic related issues such as unrestrained drivers, children, speeding, motorist driving while impaired and the community educational aspect of these issues as well. These funds will support two (2) new Deputy Sheriff positions, plus vehicles and other operating expenses for the officers, for the task force to replace two (2) Greensboro Police positions that have left the task force. This is the first year the county has received this grant funding, but the 8th year of funding for the overall program.
The FY 2019-20 budget does not include an estimated amount for this grant because it is a new grant for the County and receipt was not certain, so all funds need to be appropriated. In addition, two (2) new Deputy Sheriff positions will need to be created, to be contingent on grant-funding. However, because the grant is 100% federal funding and no local match is required, no additional county funds will be needed this fiscal year.
Board approval of the accompanying local government resolution for the grant is also necessary.
