BACKGROUND
Background
WHEREAS, more than 30 million Americans have diabetes and another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes; and
WHEREAS, approximately 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every day and diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the US as well as in NC and Guilford County; and
WHEREAS, diabetes is the 4th leading cause of death in Guilford County’s African-American residents resulting in approximately 33 deaths per 100,000 populations each year; and
WHEREAS, the seriousness of diabetes is often underestimated due to the fact that diabetes is rarely listed as a cause of death, but rather the complications caused by diabetes are listed instead; and
WHEREAS, diabetes can lead to increased risk for heart attack or stroke, kidney failure, amputations, and advance diabetic retinopathy, greatly increasing the risk of severe vision loss, as well as nerve damage; and
WHEREAS, a healthy lifestyle is important for individuals with diabetes and includes exercising, not smoking and maintaining a healthy weight and balanced diet; and
WHEREAS, this year’s theme for Diabetes Awareness Month is Managing Diabetes - It’s Not Easy, But It’s Worth It; and
WHEREAS, Diabetes Awareness Month is an opportunity to increase awareness of diabetes and the importance of healthy lifestyle in diabetes prevention and care;
Now, therefore, be it resolved that Guilford County Board of County Commissioners
do hereby proclaim
November 2018 as
DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH
This Board encourages all Guilford County residents to take steps to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of their families by making healthy personal lifestyle choices, seeking regular preventative health care and logging on to www.myguilford.com
