Proclamation Declaring November as World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in Guilford County
WHEREAS, the cause of most pancreatic cancers continues to remain unknown where too often the subtle symptoms are attributed to lesser serious medical conditions that go undiagnosed until the disease has reached the late stages of progression; and
WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all major cancers, and just 2 to 10 percent of those diagnosed survive five years; and
WHEREAS, studies show that death rates for pancreatic cancer are increasing in the United States, while death rates are declining for most other cancers; and
WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the seventh most common cause of cancer-related death in men and women across the world and is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in developed countries, surpassing even breast cancer in the United States, with an estimated 280,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer diagnosed each year; and
WHEREAS, the good health and well-being of the residents of Guilford County are enhanced as a direct result of increased awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early detection, causes, and effective treatments.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners designate NOVEMBER AS PANCREATIC CANCER MONTH IN GUILFORD COUNTY and encourages its citizens to become aware of its symptoms: including abdominal or back pain, weight loss, jaundice, loss of appetite, nausea, and diabetes, and discuss early diagnosis options with their healthcare providers.
FURTHERMORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners hopes to elevate awareness and draw attention to pancreatic cancer in hopes of greater investment and interest in the disease, which will allow more people to be diagnosed in time for surgery - currentl...
