BACKGROUND
Background
The Aging and Adult Services Division (AASD) provides comprehensive Guardianship services to Guilford County individuals when there is a deficit of individuals or corporations that are readily available to serve them. Guardianship has historically been a program that has served older individuals with medical and/or dementia issues and individuals with developmental disabilities. The service trend has shifted dramatically over the last five to seven years toward serving a greater number of young adults with mental health and substance abuse diagnoses.
The presentation provides an overview of guardianship services, trends, liabilities, and needs, particularly for increased mental health and substance abuse treatment within the county.
The staff of the Guardianship team(s) serve to protect those individuals for whom DSS has been appointed legal guardianship to provide the least restrictive services wherever possible, and to work toward restoring an individual’s rights so they may resume independent activities without DSS oversight.
