PROCLAMATION DECLARING APRIL 9-15, 2017 AS NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK IN GUILFORD COUNTY
WHEREAS, libraries are not just about what they have for people, but what they can do for and with people; and,
WHEREAS, libraries have long served as trusted and treasured institutions, and library workers and librarians fuel efforts to better their communities, campuses and schools; and,
WHEREAS, National Library week is a national observance first sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958, and is a time to celebrate the many contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians with the 2017 theme being "Libraries Transform"; and,
WHEREAS, librarians are organizers and information experts, who for centuries have guided people to the best information resources; who provide more than facts and share their expertise and services to add meaning to those facts; and,
WHEREAS, librarians continue to fulfill their role in leveling the playing field for all who seek information and access to technologies, especially as our society is at a critical juncture regarding the changing information landscape and the skills needed to thrive in our digital world. Librarians support and effect social change through their commitment to provide equitable access to information for all library users regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or socio-economic status; and,
WHEREAS, libraries and librarians open a world of possibilities through traditional and non-traditional innovative programs such as: STEAM programming, Makerspaces, job-seeking resources and the power of reading which help to transform both communities and individuals; and
WHEREAS, As we prepare to celebrate National Library Week, Guilford County joins library supporters across the country in celebrating and recognizes the value ...
