BACKGROUND

background

On February 9, 2017, the Guilford County Animal Services Advisory Board discussed options for encouraging citizens of Guilford County to spay and neuter their pets.  The board recommended creating a differential structure for the recovery fees assessed to owners who reclaim their pets from the shelter.  The recommended changes to the existing fee schedule will establish new recovery fees for animals that have been sterilized.  Additionally, the advisory board recommended providing owners who recover intact pets from the shelter a $50.00 rebate if they have the pet spayed or neutered.  Owners will have 30 days from the date of recovery to provide proof of sterilization to Animal Shelter staff to receive the sterilization refund.

The advisory board recommended a period of education before implementing the changes and targeted the start of the 2017-18 fiscal year on July 1, 2017 for transitioning to the new fee structure.
