BACKGROUND
Background
The Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) is an independent non-profit organization that fosters excellence and accountability in emergency management and homeland security programs, by establishing credible standards applied in a peer review accreditation process.
EMAP defines an Emergency Management Program as a jurisdiction-wide system that provides for management and coordination of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery activities for all hazards. The system encompasses all organizations, agencies, departments, entities, and individuals responsible for emergency management and homeland security for that jurisdiction.
To achieve accreditation, applicants must demonstrate through self-assessment, documentation and peer assessment verification that its program meets the Emergency Management Standard which consists of 64 standard elements.
Guilford County is the first County in North Carolina to receive EMAP Accreditation, and one of only 37 local programs accredited throughout the United States.
