RESOLUTION
Resolution
WHEREAS, Walta Mae Higgins Johnson passed away at the age of 84 on July 13, 2016. An engaged educator and humanitarian, Mrs. Johnson is also remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who was a passionate advocate of educational opportunities for all children; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson is survived by her sister, Bettye Miller and brother, Quinnie Higgins; her three daughters: Cheryl Porter; Vickie Johnson; and Iris Austin; and her son Dellwyn Johnson; along with their spouses, her six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews; to whom she instilled her love of scholarship, athletics and a dedication to community enrichment; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson graduated from James B. Dudley High School in 1948 and received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from North Carolina A&T State University in 1952, where she was an all-star basketball player; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson’s commitment to improving the lives of children through literacy is evidenced by her impressive thirty-four year career as an elementary teacher and reading specialist in the Greensboro City Schools system, and her active membership with the North Carolina Association of Educators; and

WHEREAS, upon retirement, Mrs. Johnson continued to encourage and promote educational opportunities for all ages through her involvement in numerous recreational, service and faith-based organizations; and was honored as “New Zion Mother of the Year” in 2010 by her church, New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, for her extraordinary leadership and accomplishments.



NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners that it hereby expresses its appreciation and admiration for the life of Walta Mae Higgins Johnson and her contributions to the Guilford County community, and extends its sincere ...
