BACKGROUND
Background
National Recovery month, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a national observance held each September to educate Americans on substance abuse treatments and mental health services that enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life. The observance reinforces the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treatments are effective and people can recover.

Millions of American lives have been transformed through recovery, and National Recovery Month highlights their achievements and increases awareness about the diseases of mental and substance abuse disorders, while offering a system of support to those individuals still seeking resources and assistance with their medical conditions.
