BACKGROUND
Background
As a collective effort that the Sheriff's Office has pursued in prior years, the City of Greensboro (on behalf of GPD), as lead applicant and primary recipient; along with Guilford County (on behalf of the GCSO) and City of High Point (on behalf of the HPPD) as sub-recipients, have applied to the United States Department of Justice-Bureau of Justice Assistance ("USDOJ-BJA") for federal funding through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant ("JAG grant"). These funds will be used to purchase equipment to enhance law enforcement service levels and increase officer safety and efficiency to reduce crime and improve the quality of life of residents.
From this grant, the GCSO will receive $74,397. With the BOCC's approval, the GCSO will purchase three (3) Parrott ANAFI UKR GOV drones ($52,800); three electric bikes for special event patrols ($10,200); three (3) tracking equipment used to support the existing StarChase program to tag and track fleeing vehicles ( $9,105); and six (6) motorcycle helmets for the Motorcycle Team ($2,400). The excess amount of $108 will be covered by the budget in the Sheriff's FY 2026-27 budget.
The GCSO, GPD, and HPPD are utilizing performance measures promulgated by the USDOJ-BJA to gauge the effectiveness of their respective law enforcement strategies and use of JAG grant funds. Each performance measure is designed to focus on successfully achieving results. Results will be reported quarterly to the Bureau of Justice Assistance via the Performance Measurement Tool (PMT) to ensure accountability and allow an overview of the progress we are making towards the results we are seeking.
