RESOLUTION
Resolution
WHEREAS, one in seventeen Americans, or approximately six (6) percent of the population, suffers from a serious mental illness such as major depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia; and
WHEREAS, the World Health Organization has reported that four of the ten leading causes of disability in the United States and other developed countries are mental disorders, and that major depressive illness will be the leading cause of disability in the world for women and children by the year 2020; and
WHEREAS, all Americans experience times of difficulty and stress in their lives; and
WHEREAS, prevention is an effective way to reduce the burden of mental health conditions; and
WHEREAS, mental health conditions are real and prevalent in our communities; and
WHEREAS, with early and effective treatment, those individuals with mental health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives; and
WHEREAS, we encourage all citizens to fight stigma, provide supportive opportunities, educate the public and advocate for equal care of individuals with mental illness in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners that it hereby proclaims May 2016 as "MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH" and recommits our community to increasing its awareness and understanding of mental health, and to promote identification, treatment and management of mental illnesses.
