Resolution
WHEREAS, Guilford County is home to a diverse and growing population, including individuals of Hindu faith, who contribute significantly to the cultural, economic, and social fabric of our community; and
WHEREAS, U.S. Census Bureau data shows that the Asian population in Guilford County has seen substantial growth, with over 17,000 residents of Asian origin as of the most recent census, which includes a significant number of individuals of Nepalese and Hindu backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Diwali, also known as the "Festival of Lights," is one of the most important holidays for Hindus worldwide, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil; and
WHEREAS, Diwali is celebrated not only by those of Indian or Nepalese heritage but by millions of people across the world, and its observance reflects the shared values of family, community, and the triumph of hope and goodness; and
WHEREAS, the increasing Hindu population in Guilford County and the Piedmont Triad Region enriches our cultural diversity, promotes interfaith understanding, and strengthens the bonds between all communities; and
WHEREAS, the values celebrated during Diwali, including family, community, and togetherness, resonate with all Guilford County citizens; and the Board of Commissioners recognizes the importance of celebrating cultural and religious diversity, raising awareness of Diwali, and honoring the contributions of the Hindu community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners proudly recognizes and celebrates Diwali, the Festival of Lights, during October 29 through November 3, 2024 and expresses its deep appreciation for the cultural and religious contributions of the Hindu community to the county.
