RESOLUTION
Resolution
WHEREAS, since 1988, December 1st has been recognized globally as World AIDS Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, supporting the nearly 39.9 million people living with HIV/AIDS, and honoring the 32 million people who have lost their lives to the disease; and
WHEREAS, in Guilford County, more than 2,797 people are living with HIV today, along with a total of 37,490 people in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Guilford County consistently reports higher HIV infection rates than both North Carolina and the United States, ranking as the second highest county in the state for new HIV infections for the years 2020-2022; and
WHEREAS, in North Carolina, the number of people newly categorized as having Stage 3 HIV (also known as AIDS) increased in 2023, similarly to 2022 and increased compared to the previous five years; and
WHEREAS, the theme for World AIDS Day 2024 is “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress,” which highlights the significant advancements that HIV programs have made, both globally and domestically, while also urging for continued innovation to ensure no communities are left behind; and
WHEREAS, because of advancements in treatments such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), we have the comprehensive tools to prevent new HIV infections; and
WHEREAS, it is essential to unite as a community to support individuals living with HIV/AIDS, promote innovative prevention strategies, and advocate for policies that enhance health care access for all; and
WHEREAS, Guilford County recognizes the Guilford County Division of Public Health, HIV/AIDS community-based organizations, local hospitals, HIV infectious disease doctors, health care providers, advocates, and other community and faith-based allies in supporting efforts to improve education, prevention...
