RESOLUTION

Resolution

WHEREAS, High Point Alpha Art Club was founded in 1924 as a social club for African American women; and

 

WHEREAS, club was established during an era when segregation prohibited African American professionals from joining white organizations; and

 

WHEREAS, the club expanded from its social origins to become a social AND civic organization that addressed a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural causes; and

 

WHEREAS, the Alpha Art Club’s earliest initiatives included assisting young ladies in the community, bringing entertainers to perform in the city of High Point, hosting art exhibits and donating to the Red Cross; and

 

WHEREAS, more recently, the club has sponsored scholarships for young African American women, supported the NAACP, assisted in efforts to alleviate hunger within High Point, offers a mentoring program called the Legacy Foundation and has also adopted a portion of Washington Street in High Point; and

 

WHEREAS, in recognition of its many contributions, its years of civic work throughout the community and its current standing as the Triad’s oldest known African American women’s club, the High Point Museum is hosting a 12-panel exhibit titled “Pathos, Patience and Perseverance: Celebrating 100 Years of Alpha Art Club” that will remain open through April 2025.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize and celebrate the centennial anniversary of the High Point Alpha Art Club and encourages citizens to visit the High Point Museum’s exhibit honoring the history and legacy of this organization.

 

ADOPTED this the 19th day of December 2024.
