BACKGROUND
Background
The North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission and its Crime Victim Services Committee advocates for victims by promoting the development of effective programs that improve the response of human service professionals and the criminal justice system to crime victims through grants from two (2) Federal funding sources. These sources are the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and the Services-Training-Officers-Prosecutors (STOP) grant programs. One of their grant priorities is expanding units of law enforcement officers specifically targeting crimes against women, including crimes of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking.
The grant proposes to maintain three Guilford County Sheriff’s Deputies at the Family Justice Center, who provide essential services to these victims. They investigated 41 sexual assault cases, 410 domestic violence cases, and 20 stalking cases. They served warrants for arrest (WFA) in following cases: 24 WFAs for sexual assault, 148 WFAs for domestic violence, and 3 WFAs for stalking. The deputies served protection orders against alleged offenders for 272 sexual assault victims, 1,442 domestic violence victims, and 272 stalking victims.
This grant would provide $150,000, annually, for the three (3) performance periods of 10/1/2025 - 09/30/2026, 10/01/2026 - 09/30/2027, and 10/01/2027 - 09/30/2028, for a total award of $450,000.
