BACKGROUND
Background
With the passage of Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), the Community Project Funding / Congressionally Directed Spending (CPFCDS) program was created, to support specific community projects as part of the annual appropriations process. Congressionally directed spending provisions generally include a specific period of time in which federal administering agencies must obligate the funding. Funds are considered obligated when a grant agreement is executed. To request this funding an agency must contact their Representative or Senator. The member of Congress can submit a request to their respective Appropriations Committee. If the funding request is approved in the Federal budget, an authorization is then made to a Federal agency or Department to administer the funds.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to submit such a request to both Representative Addison McDowell and Senator Thom Tillis’ office for $540,532 in funding for equipment for its Real Time Crime Center and Special Operations Division. As crime rates have increased in the County, it is necessary for the Sheriff’s Office to have the latest technologies available in order to maintain public safety. The items purchased will enhance the functioning and monitoring capabilities of the Real Time Crime Center and the investigative capacity of the Special Operations Division.
It is anticipated that the funding period will be from 10/1/2025 to 09/30/2026 and that the grant will be administered by the Department of Justice. There is no matching requirement for these funds. If awarded, the County would be responsible for replacing equipment in future major equipment plans.
