BACKGROUND
Background
The Guilford County Sheriff's Department was awarded $50,000 in pass-through funding from the NC Department of Public Safety for local reentry council efforts. The funds were authorized in Session Law 2021-180 and must be used for the local reentry councils to meet increased demand.
Guilford County Reentry Council is a collaborative network of community and faith-based organizations and individuals who work together to advocate for, support and connect the justice-served and the justice-involved with essential services, such as: health care, housing, employment, clothing, food, treatment, transportation and family reunification. The Council's mission is to reduce recidivism, increase community/public safety, develop an infastructure/network of stakeholders assisting the justice-served and justice-involved, leverage and maximize the existing resources and services, and develop innovative approaches to address gaps in resources and services. In addition, the Council coordinates and collaborates with community stakeholders in an effort to provide supportive service and the assistance for returning citizens and their families that will facilitate a seamless and successful transition from incarceration back into the community, or assist with navigating the barriers faced by those who have been justice-involved.
The Council has assisted 51 individuals through April of this year. The funds will be used for housing, food and clothing for those justice-involved individuals. The funds must be expended by June 30, 2023. No County funds are required.
