RESOLUTION
Resolution
WHEREAS, since 1988, December 1st has been recognized around the world as World AIDS Day - a day to raise awareness, honor the more than 44 million lives lost to HIV/AIDS, and stand in solidarity with the nearly 40 million people living with HIV globally; and
WHEREAS, as of 2024, Guilford County is home to 2,833 residents living with HIV, alongside 38,614 individuals across North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Guilford County continues to report higher HIV infection rates than both the state and national averages, reinforcing the ongoing need for increased access to prevention, testing, and treatment services; and
WHEREAS, advancements in prevention and treatment - such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), and effective antiretroviral therapy - offer powerful tools to prevent new HIV infections and help people with HIV live long, healthy lives; and
WHEREAS, ending the HIV epidemic requires community-wide commitment: to support those living with HIV, to promote innovative and inclusive prevention strategies, and to advocate for policies and resources that remove barriers to care; and
WHEREAS, Guilford County recognizes the Guilford County Division of Public Health, HIV/AIDS community-based organizations, local hospitals, HIV infectious disease doctors, healthcare providers, advocates, those living with HIV, and other community and faith-based allies in supporting efforts to improve education, prevention, research, and community service to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that Guilford County Board of County Commissioners does hereby proclaim December 1st as World AIDS Day.
ADOPTED this the 20th day of November 2025.
