BACKGROUND

background

Through funding from the NC Department of Health & Human Services - Epidemiology/Communicable Disease Branch, Guilford County Department of Health & Human Services - Public Health Division has a health trends research contract with Wake Forest University Health Sciences.  Wake and Guilford are jointly researching drug-resistant gonorrhea.  Wake Forest will collaborate with Public Health (PH) to explore mechanisms to increase Guilford PH lab capacity as we pilot new methods of gonorrhea resistance testing and developing novel strategies for rapid response to antimicrobial-resistant gonorrhea.

Over the course of the program, the SURRG collaborative has collected and tested 52,363 specimens for gonorrhea.  From August 22 through May 23, we have collected and tested 6,010 specimens.

This contract amount is $414,495 and the effective period is June 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024.   This is the eighth year of funding and results, so far, have been promising.
