PROCLAMATION
Background
WHEREAS Guilford County recognizes older adults are the foundation of a prosperous and viable community; and
WHEREAS elder abuse is an ever-increasing issue in our society that crosses all cultural and socio-economic boundaries; and
WHEREAS elder abuse is often defined as ANY act that harms a senior or jeopardizes his/her health or welfare; and
WHEREAS Guilford County is dedicated to eliminating ALL incidents of neglect, exploitation and/or abuse suffered by any older adult; and
WHEREAS older adults deserve to be treated with the utmost respect and dignity to enable them to serve as leaders, mentors, advocates, volunteers and active members of our community; and
WHEREAS preventing elder abuse allows older adults to live independently, and contribute to the life and vibrancy of Guilford County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim June 2016 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month and encourages all citizens acknowledge the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue, learn how to report abuse and raise awareness, and take a stand against elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.
