PROCLAMATION
Proclamation
Whereas, October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
Whereas, according to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 316,950 new invasive breast cancer cases will be diagnosed among women in the United States in 2025, and about 42,170 women are expected to die from the disease; and among men, an estimated 2,800 new cases and 510 deaths from breast cancer are projected in 2025; and
Whereas, in North Carolina, women have approximately a one-in-eight lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, which remains the second-leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States, and statistically breast cancer disproportionately impacts Black women, who experience about 40% higher mortality rates than White women, according to the CDC and the American Cancer Society; and
Whereas, the North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics, through its North Carolina Cancer Profiles, estimates that in 2025 approximately 13,111 women in North Carolina and 638 women in
Guilford County will be diagnosed with breast cancer; and
Whereas, with routine mammogram screening and follow-up testing, the disease can be detected early when it can be most effectively treated and save lives; and
Whereas, being aware of the health information, education, treatment, and support methods available can help individuals find and receive the appropriate care and resources they need to improve their quality
of life.
Now, therefore, be it resolved that Guilford County Board of County Commissioners does hereby proclaim the month of October 2025 as
NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
