PROCLAMATION

Proclamation

WHEREAS, initiated in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week, it was first proclaimed National Hispanic Heritage Month by President George H. W. Bush on September 14, 1989, and observed from September 15th through October 15th; and

WHEREAS, the month also celebrates the independence days of several Latin American countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15th, Mexico on September 16th, and Chile on September 18th. The month also include holidays that recognize Hispanic contributions such as Virgin Islands - Puerto Rico Friendship Day that is celebrated in the U.S. Virgin Islands; and

WHEREAS, every year this is a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community through festivals, art shows, conferences, gatherings, and much more; and

WHEREAS, Hispanic heritage holds an indelible place in the heart and soul of our County, State, and Nation, and National Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us that the American identity is a fabric of diverse traditions and stories woven together. We have drawn strength and insights from Hispanic writers, scientists, soldiers, doctors, entrepreneurs, academics, and leaders in labor and government. Our culture has been enriched by the rhythms, art, literature, and creativity of Hispanic peoples; and

WHEREAS, Latinos have helped chart America’s course since our start - as doctors and engineers; artists and entrepreneurs; and leaders in science, business, labor, government, and military and across grassroots movements. Their faith and drive have pushed our country to grow, prosper, and pursue its highest ideals; and

WHEREAS, this month, we carry on the important work of honoring Hispanic heritage. Let us give thanks to the many generations of Hispanic leaders who have helped build this country and continue to fight for equality and justice; and

WHEREAS, Guilford County plans to promote awareness and observe this month with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs that celebrate Hispanic heritage and recognize the impact Hispanic peoples have had on our Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim September 15th through October 15, 2024 as "NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH" and encourage all county officials, employees, schools and residents to take this opportunity to learn more about the vital contribution and achievements of the Latino community through hard work, family, faith, pride, and possibility, which is a testimony that there is nothing we cannot do when we do it together.

ADOPTED this the 5th day of September 2024.
