Resolution
WHEREAS, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated was founded on September 19, 1963, at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) in Baltimore, Maryland, by twelve visionary men: Albert Hicks, Lonnie Spruill, Jr., Charles Briscoe, Frank Coakley, John Slade, Barron Willis, Webster Lewis, Charles Brown, Lewis Hudnell, Charles Gregory, Elias Dorsey, Jr., and Michael Williams, who sought to establish an organization dedicated to the principles of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity, and brotherhood among men; and
WHEREAS, since its founding, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated has grown into a distinguished international organization committed to developing leaders, promoting academic excellence, supporting communities, and addressing social needs through meaningful service and civic engagement; and
WHEREAS, the fraternity's commitment to scholarship, leadership, brotherhood, and service has inspired generations of members to make positive contributions in education, government, business, public service, and communities throughout the nation; and
WHEREAS, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to serving communities through programs and initiatives that promote educational achievement, economic empowerment, health and wellness, mentorship, voter engagement, and community development; and
WHEREAS, the brothers of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated have made meaningful contributions to the Guilford County community and the broader Piedmont Triad region through volunteerism, mentorship, charitable activities, youth development, and partnerships with civic, educational, and community organizations; and
WHEREAS, on September 19, 1982, Nu Omega Alumni Chapter was chartered by Dennis Allen, Charles LeRome Davis, Jr., George Malloy, Clarkston Thomas, and Curtis Green; and
WHEREAS, Nu Omega is committed to upholding the fraternity's traditions and to making a positive difference in the lives of others; currently advising undergraduates in the Zeta Chapter at North Carolina A&T State University, that was chartered on May 9, 1969; and
WHEREAS, Guilford County recognizes the value of organizations such as Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated that encourage scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity, and brotherhood among men, and civic responsibility that contribute to building stronger, more connected, and more vibrant communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners hereby recognizes and celebrates September 19, 2026, as Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated Founders' Day in Guilford County.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners commends the members, alumni, and supporters of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated for their longstanding commitment to scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity, brotherhood among men, service, and community engagement, and encourages all residents to join in recognizing this important milestone and the fraternity's continued contributions to our community by “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One!”
