Resolution
WHEREAS, Guilford County Commissioner Stephen “Steve” George Arnold departed this life at the age of 61 on Friday, April 28, 2023. Born July 12, 1961 in Chicago Illinois, he was the oldest son of Rosalie Fowler Arnold and Dr. Gordon B. Arnold; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Arnold graduated from Andrews High School in High Point, Capernwray Bible School in Carnforth England, and received his Bachelor of Political Science from UNC-Greensboro; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Arnold was initially elected to the Board in 1990 and was reelected in 1994, 1998, 2002, and again in 2006; and during his tenure he was elected by his peers to serve as Chairman and Vice-Chairman; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Arnold was known for his strong conservative voice on the Board; serving as an advocate for efficient processes, accountable government, and the advancement of the small businessman. He is remembered for his vast experience, knowledge, and ability to work across the aisle; and
WHEREAS, during his ongoing commitment to the citizens of Guilford County, Commissioner Arnold served on numerous committees over the years such as the County’s Jail Construction Advisory Committee, Budget Committee, Human Services Improvement Task Force, as well as his service as liaison for the Board on the High Point Economic Development Corporation. Commissioner Arnold was also instrumental in formulating and sponsoring Guilford County’s innovative Commercial Investment Policy; and
WHEREAS, some of the accomplishments Commissioner Arnold was most proud of during his years of service were: making government more accessible and accountable to the public by moving the meetings to the evenings so that more citizens could attend; the promotion of an educated and informed board of elected commissioners that were engaged and able to move efficiently through Board meetings; and inclusion of the Board’s invocation and pledge of allegiance before each meeting as a way for the board to recognize its role to serve humbly in their representation of the citizens of Guilford County; and
WHEREAS, Commissioner Arnold was known for his active participation in his church, and for his love of his family, which included his children Olivia, Stephen and Richard and his wife Nicole, and dedicated a significant portion of his life to the betterment of Guilford County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners that it hereby expresses its appreciation for the accomplishments of Guilford County Commissioner Stephen “Steve” Arnold and his dedicated service to Guilford County, North Carolina, and extends its sincere condolences to his family and friends in his passing.
