PROCLAMATION
Proclamation
WHEREAS, on March 22, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for individuals 60 years and older; and
WHEREAS, for more than five decades, this landmark law has helped to fund community-based organizations - like Meals on Wheels - and it is still the only federal program designed specifically to meet the nutritional and social needs of older adults; and
WHEREAS, our local partner, Senior Resources of Guilford, has served this community and manages the Meals on Wheels programs throughout the county to ensure our seniors are provided nutritious meals that help them maintain their health and independence; and
WHEREAS, volunteers for Meals on Wheels are the backbone of the program, as they deliver meals and provide a powerful opportunity for social connection, both of which combat the negative health effects and economic consequences of hunger, loneliness and isolation on our senior population; and
WHEREAS, during Community Champions Week (March 23-27, 2026), Meals on Wheels America and encourages communities to support their “End the Wait” plan which will encourage support at the federal, state and local levels to ensure community partners, like Senior Resources of Guilford, can continue to provide nutritious meals and moments of connection to ALL seniors who need these vital services, so they can continue living healthy lives with independence and dignity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim the week of March 23-27, 2026 as Community Champions Week in Guilford County and encourages all citizens to support Senior Resources of Guilford’s Meals on Wheels programs through volunteerism and/or participation in relevant activities and educational opportunities.
