RESOLUTION
Resolution
WHEREAS, Mr. Ronnie Surgeon, Sr. passed away on March 18, 2024, at the age of 71 years; and
WHEREAS, following graduation from James B. Dudley Senior High School in Greensboro, he matriculated to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, completing a bachelor’s degree in political science, and later obtaining a criminal justice certificate from Guilford Technical Community College; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Surgeon began his career as a Deputy Sheriff of Guilford County, later his love for cooking led to food service management, becoming a McDonald’s franchise owner and operator, and holding management positions at O’Henry BBQ, Holiday Inn Restaurant, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Krystal Burgers, and Guilford County Schools; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Surgeon was a long-term member of Anderson Grove Baptist Church, serving as Trustee, Usher, Choir Member, Sunday School teacher, Finance Committee, and Boy Scout volunteer until he later joined Love and Faith Christian Fellowship; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Surgeon was extremely active in the community, serving as Mayor Pro-Tem of Pleasant Garden since 2020, Commissioner of the Pleasant Garden Fire Department, PTA supporter of Hairston Middle School, and a volunteer for the Guilford County School System; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Surgeon was known for his work ethic, empathy, compassion, and dignity, and this beloved patriarch dedicated his life to community endeavors, civic engagement, and local politics to make our county a better place for us all, and his life is an outstanding example to all citizens of Guilford County, as evidenced by love for his family, Brenda Neal Surgeon, wife of over fifty (50) years; two (2) children, Ronnie Surgeon, II and Shannon Barfield (Michael); five (5) grandchildren, Paris, Amber, Angel, Michael Jr., and Trista; three (3) great-grandchildren, A.J., Aadeah, and Tuscalossa; in addition to his brother, Waymon Cornelle Surgeon, sister Angelia (Maurice) Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, relatives and friends.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners expresses its appreciation for the full and productive life of Mr. Ronnie Surgeon, Sr.; offers its condolences and best wishes; and that a copy of this resolution be presented to his family as a symbol of gratitude for his leadership skills, culinary talents, and dedicated civic service to both country and community.
