2019 Public Health Month Proclamation

Guilford County, North Carolina
WHEREAS, we hereby recognize and acknowledge 108 years of public health service to the residents of Guilford County by the Guilford County Department of Public Health, and the immeasurable contribution of their services and programs to the quality of life in our County; and
WHEREAS, the County’s public health measures to control and eliminate infectious diseases, improve environmental sanitation, and promote healthy lifestyle practices have been the greatest cause of improved health status and increased life expectancy for Guilford County’s residents; and
WHEREAS, the County’s public health department plays a critical role in eliminating health inequities and preventing chronic diseases and injuries, resulting in improved productivity and decreased health care costs for all residents of Guilford County; and
WHEREAS, the County’s public health department plays a critical role in both local and state emergency response capacity to natural and man-made disasters and widespread disease outbreaks or public health threats (such as the current opioid crisis); and
WHEREAS, our local public health department assures that restaurant food we eat, hotels we visit and child care centers where our children play are all safer thanks to environmental health specialists who inspect these facilities on a routine basis; and
WHEREAS, our health department promotes better health through the lifespan by providing services and supporting policies to help young people stay well and develop into healthy adults through care for pregnant women, immunizations for all ages, dental care for children, promoting physical activity, and helping schools to provide healthy foods; and
WHEREAS, the County’s public health department has traditionally and continues to strive in achieving PH 3.0 goals of driving local health improvements by bringing together and joining community members and partner organizations to collectively impact social determinants of health in our County; and
WHEREAS, the County’s public health department is committed to assisting North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services to transition its Medicaid fee-for-service delivery system into a well- managed care program which addresses medical and non-medical human needs; and
Now, therefore, be it resolved that Guilford County Board of Commissioners
do hereby proclaim
April, 2019 as
PUBLIC HEALTH MONTH
This Board encourages all Guilford County residents to take steps to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of their families by making healthy personal lifestyle choices, seeking regular preventative health
care and logging on to www.guilfordcountync.gov <http://www.guilfordcountync.gov> for information and suggestions for maintaining and improving health.
