PROCLAMATION

Proclamation

WHEREAS, family caregivers play an essential role in supporting older adults, spouse, family members and loved ones, helping them remain independent in their homes and communities where they most want to be; and

WHEREAS, more than 2.1 million family caregivers across North Carolina provide invaluable support to loved ones each day, serving as the backbone of the state's long-term care system; and

WHEREAS, family caregivers in North Carolina provide approximately 1.79 billion hours of unpaid care annually, valued at an estimated $33 billion, contributing significantly to the well-being of families and generating substantial savings for taxpayers; and

WHEREAS, family caregivers often balance the physical, emotional, financial and time-intensive responsibilities of caregiving while assisting loved ones with medications, medical care, meal preparation, personal care, household tasks, financial management, transportation and many other daily needs; and

WHEREAS, many caregivers face significant financial challenges, frequently paying for care-related expenses out of pocket while managing rising costs for housing, food, utilities and health care. As a result, many are forced to reduce savings, take on debt, delay bill payments, reduce work hours, or leave the workforce entirely; and

WHEREAS, family caregivers deserve not only our gratitude and recognition, but also meaningful support, resources, and solutions that help ease the financial, emotional and practical burdens of caregiving.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim November 2026 as NATIONAL FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH in Guilford County and encourages all residents to recognize and honor the family caregivers in their lives.  Whether you are currently a caregiver, have been one in the past, may become one in the future, know someone who serves in this role or may someday depend upon a caregiver yourself, caregiving touches all of us.  Family caregivers need our support and advocacy, and the Board of Commissioners extends its sincere appreciation for their dedication and tenacity.

ADOPTED this the 5th day of November 2026.
