BACKGROUND

background

Through funding from the NC Department of Health & Human Services - Epidemiology/Communicable Disease Branch, Guilford County Department of Health & Human Services-Public Health Division has a health trends research contract with Wake Forest University Health Sciences. Wake and Guilford are jointly researching drug-resistant gonorrhea. Wake Forest will collaborate with Public Health (PH) to explore mechanisms to increase Guilford PH lab capacity as we continue to pilot new methods of gonorrhea resistance testing and develop novel strategies for rapid response to antimicrobial-resistant gonorrhea.

This is the fifth year of funding and results, so far, have been promising.  Since contracting with Wake Forest, successful partnerships and data-sharing efforts have been implemented between the Public Health department and emergency departments at Cone Health and Wake Forest (a/k/a High Point Regional) hospitals.  Approximately sixty (60) antimicrobial-resistant gonorrhea (as defined by the CDC) have been identified in Guilford County and expanded contact tracing for these alerts insured that the individuals, and their partners, were successfully treated.  Guilford is now the only site in North Carolina that is able to perform rapid antimicrobial susceptibility on disseminated spread gonorrhea (spread to other parts of the body, such as: spinal fluid, knee fluid and blood stream).

This contract amount is $408,620 and the effective period of this contract is June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021.
