RESOLUTION

Resolution

WHEREAS, the employment of men and women who are 55 years of age and over is an important objective for our community and our state. For their energies, their talents and their experience are an invaluable resource; and

WHEREAS, by the end of this year, workers older than 55 will make up almost a quarter of the U.S. labor force. Older workers, in increasing numbers, are remaining on the job beyond the traditional age of retirement, both for economic reasons and because they enjoy their jobs.; and

WHEREAS, older workers are a good investment in our work force and a boost to our state and local economy. These workers pay taxes and cover more of their own expenses during their later years, and rate high in workforce character skills such as using good judgement, commitment to quality, and attendance; and

WHEREAS, older workers continue to face barriers in the work force due to agist stereotypes, juggle the responsibilities as primary caregivers to immediate family members, are often the first to be laid off due to their higher pay ranges and frequently passed over for promotions and technical trainings even though there is greater loyalty and stability of older employees; and

WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon the entire work force as well as our employees to recognize the value of older workers and to create age-friendly workplaces that take the best advantage of these seasoned employees.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners joins the United States Department of Labor in celebrating the last week in September as National Employ Older Workers Week and urges all of our local employers to join in the support for this labor segment and raise awareness of the need for innovative strategies to tap into this valuable resource.

In Witness Whereof, I hereunto set my hand and

cause the corporateseal of the County of

Guilford to be affixed, this the 15th Day of September, 2016
