BACKGROUND
Background
Through a Memorandum of Understanding, Guilford County Department of Health & Human Services - Division of Public Health (Public Health) and Every Baby Guilford, Inc. shares Every Baby Guilford brand and jointly implement infant mortality reduction services.
The Adopt-A-Mom program provides linkage to prenatal care for uninsured pregnant individuals in Guilford County who do not qualify for Medicaid. Services include access to prenatal care, health education, counseling, and referrals to community resources to address social determinants of health.
The program has served the community for over 34 years, partnering with local obstetric providers to offer prenatal care at a reduced cost. Approximately 260 uninsured pregnant individuals benefit from this program each year.
Public Health provides staffing, operational supplies, and equipment to operate the Adopt-A-Mom program. This includes a Medical Interpreter and a Patient Coordinator, both of whom also function as patient navigators to assist clients in overcoming language barriers and connecting with vital community resources.
The Adopt-A-Mom program aligns with public health best practices and community-based standards for infant mortality reduction. Collaborative funding from Guilford County Partnership for Children’s Smart Start program and Every Baby Guilford, Inc. ensures equitable access to care for vulnerable populations. Funding from Every Baby Guilford, Inc includes $35,776 representing 47% of the Medical Interpreter's salary and fringe.
Public Health is requesting the Board of Commissioners’ approval to accept funding in the amount of $171,176 from Every Baby Guilford, Inc. (EBG) to support the Adopt-A-Mom program, a longstanding initiative designed to reduce infant mortality and promote healthy families within Guilford County.
