RESOLUTION

Resolution

WHEREAS, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven visionary educators committed to scholarship, service, sisterhood, and civic engagement; and

WHEREAS, for fifty years, the Delta Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has upheld these founding principles through steadfast leadership, meaningful community service, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting women, youth, and families; and

WHEREAS, since its chartering on April 24, 1976, Delta Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter has served as a vital force for positive change-advancing educational initiatives, promoting civic responsibility, supporting economic empowerment, and addressing critical social needs within the community; and

WHEREAS, the success, longevity, and impact of the Delta Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter are rooted in the vision, courage, and dedication of its nine charter members, whose commitment laid the foundation for five decades of excellence, sisterhood, and service; and

WHEREAS, the charter members include: Lois M. Barnes, Irma T. Bass, Doris G. Brandon, Ernestine M. Green, Dorothy E. Helms, Sarah S. Howell, Ruby W. Jones, Meada G. Shipman, and Ruth V. Whitwork, and whose leadership and sacrifice established a lasting legacy that continues to inspire current and future generations of Sorors; and

WHEREAS, the affiliate network includes the Rhosebud Club for girls aged 8 through 11, the Rhoer Club for young women aged 12 through 18, and the Philos who are principle-driven and sorority-mission supporters; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Sigma was the first alumnae chapter organized in Greensboro, North Carolina; currently advising undergraduates in the Gamma Chapter at North Carolina A&T State University, the Nu Nu Chapter at Bennett College, the Omicron Eta Chapter at UNC-Greensboro, and the Omicron Upsilon Chapter at Elon University; and

WHEREAS, throughout its 50-year history, Delta Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter has exemplified the sorority’s motto, “Greater Service, Greater Progress,” through impactful programming, strong partnerships, and faithful stewardship of Sigma Gamma Rho’s mission; and

WHEREAS, this Golden Anniversary represents not only a milestone of longevity, but a celebration of enduring purpose, collective achievement, and the profound influence of sisterhood in action.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners hereby recognizes and congratulates the Delta Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we honor and commend the chapter’s charter members, past leaders, and current members for their vision, dedication, and exemplary service to the community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we extend best wishes for continued success as the Delta Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter carries forward its proud legacy of scholarship, service, and sisterhood for generations to come.
