BACKGROUND
background
Guilford County has been requested to apply for and administer a State Historic Preservation Pass-Through Grant for repair work to the locally-designated Mendenhall Home Place. The total estimated project cost for repair to the northeast corner main house porch support timber and replacement of the roof shingles is estimated at $21,000.
This Grant requires 40% local matching funds ($8,400) which is being committed by the Historic Jamestown Society, with the remaining 60% ($12,600) provided by the grant. The 40% local match provided by the Historic Jamestown Society would be deposited with the County, if the project is approved by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), and as a condition of the grant. The proposed project is in addition to the 2015 Mendenhall House Masonry Restoration project awarded by SHPO in 2015, and if this grant application is approved the 2017 proposed work could tentatively begin as early as May 2017, and be completed by the end of June 2017.
Approval to submit the application to the SHPO signifies that the County is in agreement with the application and that it will serve as a conduit for grant administration. If approved, County staff will be assisted by SHPO staff in grant administration and the County would be reimbursed for any upfront project costs. The Guilford County Historic Preservation Commission endorsed this application at its March 21, 2017 regular meeting (see attached draft minutes).
