BACKGROUND

Background

On October 11, 2024 the Honorable retired Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Joe Craig was honored with a portrait that was painted by artist, Melanie Godwin.

Judge Joe Craig grew up in High Point, North Carolina, and practiced civil law with Fisher, Clinard for 20 years. Judge Craig was later appointed Superior Court Judge by Governor Mike Easley and was sworn in on February 26, 2002. Following his appointment, Craig ran for election to a full eight-year term that November. He sought reelection in 2010 and 2018, always running unopposed.

During his tenure on the bench, Judge Craig presided over several civil and criminal cases, ranging from high-profile murder trials to complicated business disputes and malpractice suits.

In the final four years of his career, he served as Senior Resident until his retirement in 2022. During his time as Senior Resident, Judge Craig managed three unexpected flooding incidents at the High Point Courthouse, led the local task force in addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and handled various other responsibilities. Judge Craig dedicated many years of distinguished service to the judiciary, exemplifying fairness, integrity, and leadership in his role. His commitment to justice and his deep ties to the High Point community have left a lasting impact on the legal profession and those he served. This portrait serves as a tribute to his remarkable career and legacy in Guilford County.

The portrait was commissioned by members of the High Point Bar Association, totaling $8,560.  It is the request of the High Point Bar Association that the portrait be donated to the county to  be placed in the Crissman Courtroom - Courtroom 4C at the High Point Courthouse.  This donation is in keeping with County's tradition of hanging judicial portraits throughout the courthouse facilities.
