PROCLAMATION

Proclamation

WHEREAS, on Veterans Day, we honor the generations of women and men who have served and sacrificed for the United States of America. For close to 250 years, our veterans have defended the values that make us strong so that our nation could stand as a citadel of liberty, a beacon of freedom, and a wellspring of possibilities; and

WHEREAS, during this time we thoughtfully consider all our veterans, who put their lives on the line to protect our democracy, values, and freedom around the world. We honor our wounded warriors, so many of whom are bound by a common sense of duty, courage, and optimism, and we remember those who are still missing in action or prisoners of war; and

WHEREAS, our military families, caregivers, and survivors also answer the call to serve. Our veterans and their families give so much, and we owe them a debt we can never fully repay; and

WHEREAS, with honor and distinction, American patriots have stepped forward to serve our country and defend our way of life. Generations of servicemen and women have taken up arms to win our independence, preserve our Union, and secure our freedoms; and

WHEREAS, from the Minutemen to our Post-9/11 Generation, these heroes have put their lives on the line so that we might live in a world that is safer, freer, and more just, and we owe them a profound debt of gratitude. On Veterans Day, we salute the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who have rendered the highest service any American can offer, and we rededicate ourselves to fulfilling our commitment to all who serve; and

WHEREAS, it has long been custom to commemorate November 11th, the anniversary of the ending of World War I, by paying tribute to the heroes and to the cause of peace. Congress passed a resolution on June 4, 1928, calling for the observance of November 11th with appropriate ceremonies, and later provided in an act approved May 13, 1938, that the eleventh of November should be a legal holiday and should be known as Armistice Day; and

WHEREAS, to expand the significance of that commemoration, and to pay appropriate homage to the veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this Nation, the Congress, by an act approved June 1, 1954, changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day; and

WHEREAS, Operation Green Light’s mission is to show support for veterans of all military conflicts, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and their families and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families; and

WHEREAS, by shining the green light, we express our profound gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions our veterans and their families made on the battlefield, and at home. Those individuals who risked and sacrificed their lives fighting to protect our country and our way of life deserve our support by displaying a green light for our veterans and their families.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners hereby proclaim and observe Monday, November 11, 2024, as Veterans Day, and solemnly remember the sacrifices of all who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom through appropriate ceremonies and patriotic activities.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Guilford County Board of Commissioners do hereby encourage participation in Operation Green Light from November 4-11th to acknowledge, support, and appreciate their valor, courage, and sacrifice.

ADOPTED this the 7th day of November 2024.
